I get the attached backtrace when I try to enter a group, using a CVS
checkout from yesterday and GNU Emacs 21.2.1.
(setq byte-compile-warnings) works around it.

I believe that this has been fixed.  Check out the latest gnus-sum.el
and gnus-util.el to verify.

I apologize to all.  That was my fault.  It arose from the
problem that only XEmacs complains about the unbound variables
in the following form:

(let (foo bar)
  (byte-compile (lambda () (> foo bar))))
=>
While compiling toplevel forms:
  ** reference to free variable foo
  ** reference to free variable bar
