Huh. I think I just wrote the talk I'm supposed to give on Wednesday,
but I'm not quite sure how long it's going to be. That is, the talk
is supposed to be 45 minutes or so. How many words are there in 45
minutes, especially counting fumbling with the overhead and stuff?
I've written 3 A4 pages of 11-point text...

I don't plan on actually reading the script; I though I would just
have it to fall back upon if I totally blank out while I'm talking.
Perhaps read occational things, but fill out with lots of "uh", "ah",
"well" and "like"s.

I have to do some transparencies. Anyone have any ideas what might
look nice? Both color and b&w would be OK. Does anyone feel like
creating especially impressive and informative looks at how Gnus looks
like? Kinda demonstrate-how-Gnus-looks-and-feels kinda thing. I
would be most grateful if someone could create those, and put
full-sized screen shots somewhere I can fetch them (and then print out
onto transparencies).

It'd be nice if people would post the urls to any screen shots they
make available. Checking today, I may have a place where you could
just ftp `put' them for a day or two and post a password. I'll post
later about it. If it works out.

I did this one for an article in a german computer-magazine:

 http://linux01.gwdg.de/~steufel/gnus.jpg

If you like it, you could get it as a tiff-File, too. Just drop me a
line.

The rule of thumb I use for my presentations is 1 overhead per minute
of talking. I find that having overheads or other multi-media aids
makes for less boring talks than just talking straight. Note that my
audience has usually been 2nd to 4th year electrical engineering
students with short attention spans.

So, if you converted your script into overhead slides (bulleted,
point-form text using 12-14pt Helvetica), you should have roughly 45
slides.

I have a LaTeX template for overhead slides I dug out of the CTAN
archives, if you want it.

You can easily spend two to three minutes per overhead; switching them
around all the time can disturb the audience. The speaking should not
just be reading the slides aloud, they usually just contain headlines.

Hmmm... I am a 3rd year engineering student. :-). My above suggestions
were taught to me by the teachers here.

I for one would like a pointer to that one.

You can use standard LaTeX2e, if you want:

\documentclass{slides}
\begin{document}

\begin{slide}{}

BLAH

\end{slide}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

\begin{slide}{}

Gnus

\end{slide}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

\begin{overlay}{}

\invisible

Gnus

\visible

rules

\end{overlay}

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

\end{document}
