this must be documented somewhere, but i just can't find it...
how could i tell gnus not to fetch news on startup?

If you still want to fetch mail and use a "normal" setup, then M-x
gnus-no-server RET might be your friend. If you use the Agent, then
M-x gnus-unplugged RET might be your friend.
