You mean you hit RET on the group name and then you typed "-1" when
it asked you how many articles to download?

See the section "Customization" in the Gnus info file.  It has
suggestions that might be useful.

Have you tried other values?  The docs say that
gnus-fetch-old-headers equals `some' can be slow.  Is it the problem?
