I usually download a tarball from www.gnus.org unpack it and follow
the README included (./configure; make EMACS=xemacs and then add a
couple of lines (shown in the README) to .xemacs/init.el).

Gnus 5.8.8 and 5.9 are very similar.  5.9 has special adjustments for
Emacs (maybe it leaves out XEmacs code?).

I suggest that if you are happy with 5.9 under Emacs, then you will
be happy with 5.8.8 under XEmacs.
