I decided this was a good idea the other week too. Here's how I did
it.
(setq
;;store my sent messages somewhere.
gnus-message-archive-group "nnimap+fastmail.fm:INBOX.Sent Items")
Work's perfectly for me.
Of course now I have a new idea I'm waiting to implement. I'd like to
archive my mail to a local folder and to my IMAP server for the days
when network connectivity is a little spotty.

I think I said the opposite: Instead of frobbing
gnus-message-archive-method, just use fully qualified group names in
gnus-message-archive-group.
This seems to be what Josh is doing.
