No Read/Unreader Numbers Displyed In Groups Buffer

i've just steped into the using of gnus, and the only news server i currently
accessed is news.gnus.org.

the problem is, for any groups i subscribed, there is only a "*" prefixed on
the groups names, no a read/unreader articles number.  i can use M-g to fetch
the numbers every time, but its just on the fly. everytime after i restart
gnus, the number would and i have to M-g again and again.

below is my gnus configuration.

      )

(setq gnus-check-new-newsgroups 'ask-server
