Hello,

I'd like to somehow be able to specify several lists of email
addresses and associate each list with a unique name, such
as <List:CodingTheoryClassmates>, so that in an email message
composition I can specify the unique name in any of the
destination address fields (To, Cc, etc.) and have gnus
automagically parse the appropriate list and insert the
recipients.

Surely this has been done before? I just spent almost an
hour with Google news search (on here and gnus.ding) with
no luck. Any pointers/help would be appreciated.

There is really good "address-book" facilty for Gnus and other called
the BBDB. The mail-laias feature will do what you require

Sorry to follow up to myself - that should be "mail-alias"
