I'd suggest to kill them, then exit Emacs.  Then start Gnus again and
resubscribe.

Another thing that sometimes works is, if you use topics mode, to move
both instances of the group to the same topic using `T m'.

Problem with the first approach: your marks (read/ticked) will get
lost.
