nntp+news.freshmeat.net:fm.announce
Are others still getting Freshmeat's news feed from within 'gnus'?

Have you tried reading it with a different newsreader from the same
machine you are trying to use gnus from?
That would eliminate the possibility of it being a network or server
problem...
