Not sure whether this is a leafnode or a gnus problem but as other
news readers appear to cope either they're ignoring this error or it's
gnus

(leafnode version 2.0.0.alpha20031221a; Gnus v5.10.3)

yesterday leafnode decided to do its periodic retrieval of the full
list from my servers, at this point I already had a copy of gnus
running. When it had finished I tried to get new articles

and I got

Reading active file from localhost via nntp...
apply: Server closed connection

I exited gnus and in the same emacs session tried again and got

Reading active file from localhost via nntp...
Cannot read partial active file from nntp server.

- the retrieval of the group lists (4 servers) appeared to have worked ok
exit emacs and try gnus in new session (having quit without saving
from gnus as the group state didn't look good with all the subscribed
groups being '*'ed!) and get the same error (partial active file)

Restart machine this morning and the same error, I can read the new
articles if I enter the '*'ed groups but if I exit gnus then restart
in the same session I get 'server closed connection', if I restart
emacs I get the partial active file error and *'ed newsgroups!

I've not found that error (partial...) in the gnus sources yet...

I'd suggest to set `nntp-record-commands' to t and report the last
lines of output from the "*nntp-log*" buffer to the leafnode list.
Additionally set `gnus-verbose' to 10 and show us the last lines from
the "*Messages*" buffer. You may also try `M-x toggle-debug-on-error
RET' and post the lisp backtrace.

Bye, Reiner.
