For large groups, I usually enter the number first (it becomes a prefix)
and then hit return. This way I save the question and one additional ret.
Not much of a gain but I find it comfortable.

If you tried an index search (`i') and didn't find what you were
looking for, then consider sending a bug report with something like:
"I tried to find a way to do <foo>, I did an index search for terms
<bar> and <baz> but that didn't take me to `frob-foo' in the
manual.
Then maybe we can add more and better keywords.

This is controlled by the gnus-large-newsgroup variable.
