I use gnus under Windows XP.

From time to time, after perusing a newsgroup with a lot of postings,
when I try to mark them as read (MC), I get a message

  Memory exhausted -- use M-x save-some-buffers RET

The suggested remedy does no good. I have no actual shortage of disk
space. What is going on?
