W3 is broken and basically unmaintained. I don't think it's
worthwhile to spend a lot of time on it.

This should be easy. Do `M-x customize-option RET
mm-text-html-renderer RET' and select one of the other options: lynx,
links, w3m etc.

I tried this, but since I use window I set my .mailcap as follows:

| text/html; c:\usr\pkg\MozillaFirebird\MozillaFirebird.exe -remote openURL\(file:%s\)

But now Gnus is showing the messages as plain text, but at least it's
not barfing. Is there some other variable that's conflicting with
mm-inline-override-types? Or perhaps I'm missing some other
customization?
