hm, it was used only in one place and never a user macro

I can bring it back:

\permanent\protected\def\spaceorpar
   {\endgraf\ifhmode\space\fi}

but you have to bribe Wolfgang to add it to the interface specification 
then

Where do you use the command, in margin texts and framed blocks you can 
just use \\.
