All,

Isn't there a set of macros or module to handle inclusion of pstricks
in context?

Hi David,

I have never try to use pstricks with ConTeXt but I'm used to use it
with LaTeX...
1- If you want to use advanced features based on pstricks (like
pst-eucl, pst-circ, etc.), my thought is (IMHO) that there is no obvious
solution.
2- Depending on what do you want to do, you can maybe consider to use an
alternative like metaobj...

There is m-pstric.tex.

It also work with a current ConTeXt but you have to a change a line in
m-pstric.

I believe that PSTricks works well in context mkii,
better from TL2007 /TL2008 , so you have dvips pdftex etc that are needed
to work .

It's --nobackend

Here's the revised (ruby) texexec man page (as PDF) -- see p.3. It's
in the Debian packages and will go into the 2006 TeXLive.

Isn't there --nobackends (or something similar) which will then not
run any dvips (or dvipdfm)?

Thanks for the hint! I really like the example with \dorecurse mixed
with PSTricks; although they have their own mechanisms for that,
\dorecurse is more familiar and easier to use for me.

(I doubt that I'll return to PSTricks now that I've learn metapost and
now when TikZ is available and more portable, but it's nice to know
that I may use my old code there and for some cases PSTricks are still
an easier approach.)

I knew that there was something about pstricks available, but I always
had a feeling that it's only conditionally working (I never heard
anyone talking about PSTricks on the mailing list).

However: you're probably running the module with perl-based texexec, right?

I just tried it and had the following problems:
- filename-texapp.tex has been created (and can only be deleted
manually), but instead of dvi it resulted in an empty pdf file
- I processed that file manually, so I got the dvi, but then dvips failed
- the second was probably "my fault" (dvips sent the result to lpr),
but it's how it's set up on the system by default; using -Ppdf switch
helped, although I have no idea why/how it works exactly

So it would really help a lot:
- if the intermediate file would result in .dvi, not in .pdf
- if dvips would be called with -Ppdf or perhaps some other more
appropriate switch to assure slightly more "works-out-of-the-box"
cases
(- if temporary files could be deleted with ctxtools if needed)

It would also help a lot for tex4ht if the switch --dvi could work as
intended (and without unneded dvips run afterwards).

Mojca

PS (in a joke): why didn't you tell me that before I wrote support for
gnuplot ??? Gnuplot can already output PSTricks code which could be
read by ConTeXt then.

hm, sounds new, will need to take a look at it

The main complication with pstricks is that it uses ps for calculations;
passing each one to e.g. mp or a calculation script is not efficient, and
using tex for that purpose needs a rewrite of pstricks; and in some
occasions awareness of the history / page is needed as well as font
handling. So, one solution is to make those pictures into independent ones,
use for instance gs to convert them, and merge them into the page stream
[as can be done with eps]. Real complicated interaction with the page could
be a problem, but as with all things, there is possibly a solution. This is
not so much different from using mp runtime.

My main problem with pstricks is its inaccuracy [althoyghj i admit that i
only looked into it on behalf of ppchtex which used pictex first, pstricks
as second option, and in context metapost by default].

if there is a real need for it i can look into pdftricks and see if it can
be supported [i wonder what nice dirty trick is actually used -)]

Hi!
I tried to put PSTricks and ConTeXt together and I did it. Hans suggested to
load the module pstric

\usemodule[pstric]

or something. I think too that PSTricks has some advantages over metafun.
But I also have a "little" question:
Is it possible to use PSTricks to overlays (theoretically yes, but in
practice....)

Seracu Dan

Anybody who tried to fix this, has first taken a look at metapost. All
decided to stay with metapost, so don't expect support. It probably
wouldn't run with pdftex anyway. I suggest you take a look at metapost.
Takes some time, but definitively worth it.
