Let's see how much thread-drift I can generate this time...

Dick Hustvedt was born on this day in 1946; an architect of RSX-11 and
VMS, he also had a weird sense of humour which he demonstrated by
enshrining the "microfortnight" into VMS.

Sadly, we lost him in a car accident in 2008.

Keep up the good work, I really like the birthday/obituary announcements
you provide.

I miss my mid-90s (physical) Usenix calendar. It listed, among other
important dates, the anniversary of the first airing of the Rocky and
Bullwinkle show.

THE best engineer and software architect that I ever worked with. At
least as talented as Dave Cutler, without the arrogance and nasty
temper. A conference room in DEC's Nashua NH software engineering
facility was named after him.

One of Dick's April Fool's Day hacks, the SD-730 Solar Horologue was
kept in the Hustvedt conference room for many years. It is now at VMS
Software, Inc.

Hmm, that's actually not true. He had a car accident in 1984 on his way to
the office which left him with brain damage. He later died in 2008.

Dick Hustvedt, Peter Lipman and David Cutler were the principal engineers
responsible for VMS. Lipman left DEC the same year (1984) and we all know
the later history of Cutler... ;)

Dave Cutler was in the VMS group only for VMS version 1. He rarely
stayed on around for version 2 of anything. Hustvedt's and Lipman's
contributions for VMS were more extensive and longer-lasting than
Cutler's.

Thanks, all; correction noted. I love being wrong, because I learn a lot
that way...

since '86 he was working on an operating system, named Mica, which failed.
