There's no need to start gvfsd manually, it will be started automagically 
via dbus.

Most likely their issue is that he did not enable the dbus service.

Also note that unless polkit has rules to allow authorization for the user 
running the desktop it won't even work.
Use ConsoleKit2 or create the polkit rules manually.
