zsh doesn't print only one symbol

Hello,

echo -n "1" shows nothing

I've the latest version and bug also reproducing on 5.3

zsh --version

zsh 5.4.2 (x86_64-apple-darwin17.4.0)

For what's it worth, I get echo -n "1"

1%

zsh --version

zsh 5.4.2 (i686-pc-linux-gnu)

Use "setopt promptcr" to see output that doesn't end with \n.

... What on earth is that for?  What does " 1#  " mean?

Pardon. The above failed, but when I pasted it into the email I erased 
the line that worked (as you showed) and left the line that did nothing. 
That's sloppy.  Anyway, my question remains:


$ setopt nopromptcr

$ echo -n "1"
1
$ unsetopt nopromptcr

$ echo -n "1"
1#

It most likely means you're logged in as root.

Read the doc for the PROMPT_EOL_MARK parameter.

Yikes, it depends on various combinations of three other options, very 
exotic terminal control stuff, I hope I never need to know how all that 
works.
