Just did a pull & make:

... It seems to abort the binary and I'm back to the previous good one.
Using a plain prompt didn't help. It's not getting as far as reading
.zshrc. 'make check' = all fine.

Er, why are you attempting to read the zsh binary as a shell script?
That's what the "." command does.

Only that the first line that garbled seemed to be the printout of
the build number which I have attached to my prompt. It's not the first
time I haven't noticed that " . ./file " isn't " ./file ". As Lao Tzu
said: "Before you can see, you must look". Pardon.
Too bad there wasn't some way of flagging that error:
"You are trying to source a binary, twit."
