It seems some (possibly newer) versions of fc-list output the font file
names by default breaking the _xft_fonts completion. fc-list is not well
documented but I decided to go with fc-list -f '%{family},' instead of
fc-list : family because it ends up being shorter. This might not work
on older systems however.

There isn't actually a standard way to specify XFT style fonts. Both
xterm and urxvt use the same as fc-list but vim takes family and size
separated by a space. Other programs may do other things but I'll wait
and see before making _xft_fonts more customisable.

Oliver
