Are you taunting us? I'm sure that at least a few on in
this group could pool their influence to get your face on
the cover of CACM.

I'm looking over "Data in Flight" or "Two Views of MapReduce
Capabilities" or "Rebuilding for Eternity" and all I'm
thinking is, Brian's floating face has replaced Charon
leading us across the River Styx so that we can make the best
of Limbo. In doing so he helps us to pass the First Circle
and continue our voyage without Go-ing nuts.

Unfortunately I get interrupted in mid thought with a small
interlude of Cleese instructing Brian to correct his Latin
grammar...

I never thought of it that way, but I like that analogy. At
least no one has written a letter to the CACM titled "Brian's
face considered harmful." Would that lead to a fad of
aesthetic programming?

This is the one I've been using for myself for a while. It's
kind of old, but I haven't changed in all that time :) I'm
generally emailing from one of:

The original header was:

You can sumbim your own patches, or, alternatively if people
want to send me their face files and a list of email addresses
that they should be associated with them I will agregate them
all into a single patch.

I am happy to resize and reformat images but if you want this
service I will use mugs rather than crop so you only get black
and white. Supply the picture as 48x48 resolution and you will
be colourful

A general request to all 9fans.

If you don't have a face file on sources could you generate one
(for those of us who use faces(1)).

It really helps me to have an an image to associate with the people
I receive email from.

http://plan9.bell-labs.com/wiki/plan9/Adding_your_face/index.html

Once you have updated you local system you can the submit it to
sources using patch(1)

the need for multiple resolutions of faces disappeared with the last
gnot. the facebase should be collapsed into a single
resolution-independent hierarchy. the faces program can handle any
resolution; just put all the resolutions in one directory and use
.dict to choose which one to show.

as for personal versions, i see two solutions. one is to use binding,
which would be easier if the hierarchy were collapsed. the other is
to use a pair of .dict files and search the personal one first. in
the collapsed scheme, there is only one .dict file. faces could
easily be modified to take an argument specifying a .dict file to use
first, and fall to the official one if no match is found. finally,
all the names in .dict are relative. easy change: make it understand
absolute names, which would make personal .dict files easier to write.

Little side question: Is there an authorative source of faces files that new
entries can be submitted to for general availability?

please stick to the 48x48xN format. the problem with faces
(well one of them; don't get me started on faces) was that
it supported all these other window system specific formats
and not the core format [48x48x1 at the time]. it should
have just converted 'em only the fly, maintained a memory
cache perhaps. xbms, random SunOS formats etc etc -- no.

In http://plan9.escet.urjc.es/export/face.tgz you can
get the regular /lib/face hierarchy (as distributed) with
some other faces (from 9fans) added.

I'll update the .tgz with any other face in 48x48xN you
send to me by email.

see you(r face) soon.

That would be really nice.
I'd love at least to see 9fans faces.

It would be better to keep them at other place
since our network is not very reliable these days,
but if nobody else stands up, I'm willing to put a
tar ball at http://plan9.escet.urjc.es
with /lib/face after merging every 9fans face you
send to me by mail (in 48x48xX ☺).
