send them over for conversion if you have .bdf or .ttf.  i'll put
them on ucalgary.ca's web for everybody to download

though ttf's are a bit heavy for today's graphics cards, they'll be
fine a generation later -- it's funny how Plan 9 speeds up with each
new piece of hardware, while things like Linux and Windows work
at the same percieved speed.

this is a collection of extra fonts for Plan 9, mostly to add extra
glyphs that don't exist in the Plan 9 distribution.  "freetype/"
contains code to convert .ttf fonts to antialiase Plan 9 subfonts.

Not quite.

I use an S3 card and 19" HP91 monitor at:

Windows 2000: 1600x1200x16bpp, 75Hz
Linux/Xfree: 1600x1200x16bpp, 75Hz
Plan9: 1024x768x8bpp, I *think* 56 or 60Hz, with an ugly blob instead of 
a cursor.

Since the power supply here in the civilised world is 50Hz, screen 
refresh rates of 60Hz are not particularly useful.  The resulting 10Hz 
beat frequency is quite noticable.

As an aside, what a lot of 60Hz folk have complained about over the 
years of 50Hz being "too slow and flickery" for the human eye is more 
often them watching 50Hz displays on 60Hz power supplies, and noticing 
the same 10Hz beat.

I converted XP's Lucida Sans using ttf2sub on Andrey's page

I had to adjust the line height but font(6) is a dream come true

i'm running drawterm atm.

AA fonts were a bit slow on a Duron 800 as CPU server but with the XP1700+ they have become usable in Acme too

Arial Unicode MS might be a good font to convert - doubt that it can be
posted in converted form, but the font is available from ms

Also the code2000/code2001 fonts from http://home.att.net/~jameskass/
might be of use.

Consulting /lib/vgadb, it looks like it was actually 1800x1350x24 or
1800x1440x24 (or maybe x16).  This was two or three years ago, I think
it was just a common Mach 64 or ATI card.  Any supported vga card with
at least 220MHz of video bandwidth and enough memory (5MB bytes for
x16) should be able to do it.

Yes, people are on their own when it comes to TrueType fonts.  Unless
they want to use the Luxi stuff from XFree86 (I distribute those fonts
under the XFree86 license from the web pages linked to earlier),
they're obliged to obey the license the font comes with, or pay for
it.  This is the reason why Charles Forsyth never distributed his port
of FreeType, which was done earlier than the stuff on my web page.

The most complete (meaning having the most UTF-8 glyphs) font that i
can find is Cyberbit, which used to be distributed 'free of charge'
with Netscape Communicator.  Now google links to it have all but
disappeared, but you can still get it from their ftp server:

	ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/extras/fonts/windows/Cyberbit.ZIP

It's a very large ttf file which, when converted with ttf2subf, should
suit most Plan 9 polyglots.

Just a small addition -- i didn't do ttf2subf and the truetype port,
it was Latchezar Ionkov.

As Geoff later pointed out, it's actually 1800x1350; I
made it up. I run it on 2 different Viewsonic P815 monitors
at work, one with some form of ATI Mach64 and the other
with one of the older NVidia cards. The font I use is
/lib/font/bit/pelm/unicode.9.font.

I'd willingly trade them in for those big Samsung LCDs at
1600x1200, they probably cost less now than the P815s did
when they were new.

What video card do you drive the 2000fp with?

How do you feel that it compares with the sgi 1600sw?  (Physically,
the 2000fp's specs make it appear to be much heavier and deeper.)

i like it as well as the SGI. i like how cheap it is, too. i don't think
it's significantly bigger physically.  heavier?  who knows? who cares?

1600x1200 greyscale - I find text is sharper & easier to read when
there's only one dot per pixel (what's the right terminology?) instead
of three.

I use an elderly ATI xpert@work, and /lib/font/bit/pelm/unicode.9.font.

My VGA heaven would be a big greyscale LCD screen - do they exist?

yup, all the terminals in the flag room (the lab geoff and i were in)
were 1800x1350x24 @ (i think) 72 or 75 Mhz. except the one plus generally
sat at, becuase of his vision. but then, he used variable-width fonts in
his terminal windows, which is just weird.
