You might consider the BTC 5100.  I use one at home and work, measures
< 6 by 12 inches.  Works great with plan 9, windows, Linux.  A search
on Yahoo for BTC 5100 turned up 399 web pages.  Must be still available.

He also uses the Mitsumi Optical Sushi Mouse. It's 2.5" x 1" and glows a
nice shade of red.

i have sufficient fingers to manipulate three buttons.
the middle button can be fixed in hardware.

Yeah.  Also, for those of us who have fallen enough times that our
hands don't work all that well anymore, the chording required to make a
2 button mouse work like a 3 button mouse is pretty uncomfortable.
Man, my skateboard used to be pretty evil to me when I was younger.

Multi-button mice and pucks are notorious RSI hazards.  A company I may
not name did an RSI study of its graphics pucks.  Being a responsible
firm, they quickly redesigned the pucks--desiring to avoid lawsuits,
they quickly buried the study.

Personally, I need to use the Plan 9 mouse with caution.

And of course being a web-only operation you can't order over the phone
(that I can see searching the web site). Alas it matters not for me,
because they don't ship outside of the USA :-(

Central has a store a few miles from where I live.  They have a good
reputation (at least with me).

I am quite happy with my HHKB Lite.  Apparently there are only two
retail outlets for the things in the entire world and they are both across
the street from each other in the same shopping complex in the Japantown
neighborhood in San Francisco.  It was worth the trip for the lunch, but
the keyboard is great...  the left and right meta keys work for scrolling
down and up, which is really handy, and the keys are comfortable.

What's the story on USB mouse support?  'cause I have a few with 3
buttons (Sun sells them) and I'm thinking of getting a laptop.  The
only "three button" mice I can seem to find at the store are the ones
with the wheels.

admittedly the keyboard (some 12"x4") on the vaio 505 is not
just a keyboard it looks pretty similar to the BTC 5100.  the
whole laptop is only 22.2mm (nearly an inch [25.4mm]) thick.
so as paul says it's great to sit it on your lap and put your
feet up.  the mousepad thing would be perfect if it only had
3 buttons.  i used to hate those things, now i like them 'cos
you can put your finger (almost) anywhere and mouse, unlike
a pointing stick.

some vaio touchpads allow you to use 1 finger for button #1,
2 fingers mean button #2, and so on.

I remember looking at the BTC 5100 right before I got my HHKB.  I
didn't like it all that much (that is, the pictures that I saw....); I
thought that the layout was too ``busy''.

Probably the best looking keyboard I ever saw was the DEC Unix keyboard
that one could get on Ultrix machines and early Alphas.  There's a picture
on PFU's keyboard collection web page.  Also, the IBM 84 keyboard rocked.
 From the looks of it, the Apple Newton keyboard would be my favorite if
they would jsut get rid of caps lock, put control in the right place, and
get rid of the power key....It'd look a lot like the HHKB with arrow keys.

Man, I'd pay money for someone to make one of those....
