Where I can get this extension?
Luckyly, I have a dead SB pro card in my room, and one
PC for Plan 9 terminal without sound.

I've got sound working on a Thinkpad 560X by using the Crystal soundchip
in Soundblaster Pro emulation mode and adding some SBPro support to the
Plan 9 SB16 driver. I think most soundcards will emulate a SBPro, but
of course you only get 8-bit sound; there may be sampling rate limitations
as well.

I've used the Plan 9 Sound Blaster driver with the
newer plug and play cards, specifically the AWE32
and AWE64. You may have to use the Windows driver
to configure the plug and play stuff to sensible
interrupts, but then Plan 9 can take over from there.

In one case this entailed loading the DOS SB PNP
device driver before running b.com, but I haven't
even had to do that on systems I've configured recently.

My general experience has been that if the card is
working in Windows and you shut down to DOS and
boot Plan 9 instead, all will be well.

The only non-SB16 we have bothered hacking to work is the ESS1688
chip in the IBM Thinkpad 560E. The PC's the department buys which can
run Plan 9/Brazil are still delivered with an ISA SB-compatible card
(although it only has an 8-bit DMA channel and not the 16-bit
one as well). We buy the PC's from American Northstar, www.surfusa.com,
you could mail Eblan Farris there (efarris@surfusa.com) and ask
where they get them.

We don't use sound much and haven't felt the need to invest in newer
chips while we have a pile of recycled SB-16's sitting on the shelf and
PC's still have ISA slots.

The recent postings to this mailing list have made me jealous. My
My Plan 9 systems are soundless. Over a year ago I tried to find
a non-plug-n-play Sound Blaster 16, but was unable to locate any.
I tried one card and it conflicted with some other interrupt.

Do any of you have recommendations re the current crop of sound
cards that will work with Plan 9.
