IMHO, such implementation is inevitable to show
its "From Outer Space"-ness.

I started work on this when Plan 9 was first released to the outside
world, but never got very far. It doesn't actually seem too difficult,
and would be a considerable convenience. If I bring up a Plan 9 system
again I'll probably have another shot.

That's all the authority we need I think.

who allocates the magic numbers that identify the OS and purpose
(eg, linux fs, linux swap) in the partition tables?

as far as i know there is no authority for this. we chose 0x39 for plan 9.

If Plan9 should honour i86 disk layout, should it
not also follow sparc/mips/xxx layout too? At the same time?
Sounds like a lot of work to me.

And it is quite nice to have it at the end of the disk. For instance, I can have a dual boot sparc station.
OpenBSD at the front of the disk, plan9 at the end.

You can use multiple disks in such a case.
There really isn't any excuse for Plan 9 on x86 not cooperating
with the partitioning scheme used by *all* other x86 OSes,
including several flavors of Unix.

True, but I think it would be better to choose between the two, then
if you only had 1 OS (plan9) you could install it on a partition, but
if you needed all the 5 OS's you could also install it in the free
space.

Actually, it is quite neat. Ie means that it is possible to have 5 OSs installed,
despite the standard 4 partitions is max.

I'm pretty sure that DVD drives act like CD-ROM drives when used
with CD-ROMs, but DVD itself (video disk) is supposed to require
processing assist from an MPEG decoder (usually a hardware card),
so that aspect wouldn't work without special support.

What is this about a "new version of Plan 9"? Is Brazil available?

Anyway, I would *sure* like Plan 9 on x86 to honor the standard
disk partitioning scheme, instead of living in "empty space".

Does new version of Plan9 suport DVD drive?

don't know. a couple of weeks ago i tried to mount a dvd in a laptop
dvd drive with 9660srv and it mounted fine and i could see a bunch of
files. i didn't go any further than that. this was with the ata driver
you should have, not anything new.

perhaps someone who knows about dvd drives would know if that was
expected or if there are any 'gotchas'?

By the way, I tried to buy a DVD drive, but failed.
I was told that it's not easy to get DVD drive now...
We seem to be suffering from PlayStation 2 effect here. :-)

I meant its next release which is now doing developed in Bell Labos.

Anyway, I'll try to read DVD-ROM by the present version of Plan 9.

Thanks a lot.

Well, I've just returned from Houston yesterday, and got DVD recorded
many images of Mars in hand.

Does new version of Plan9 suport DVD drive?

Thanks.
