Hello,

I was trying to install "Plan 9" on my Dell machine, but it failed because
the system does not recognize video card. Any help  about how to go.

Card: Intel810 Video Acclerator
Type: i81xnt4 compatible display adapter
Memory: 4 MB
Chip Type: Intel810
DAC Type: Internal

I'd reckon you're better off with a less obstructionist piece of
hardware.

Good luck.  I note that the until recently, XFree86 required a special
compilation module to support this particular Intel chip.  Seeing as
hyper-super-duper-3D-FX-graphic capabilities serve little purpose in
the Plan 9 world of today, reserve that particular machine for Windows
or Linux-based games.

AIUI, The problem is that the i810 doesn't have dedicated video
memory, but is intended to share system memory.  This is basically a
cost-cutting measure.  The i810's memory area is addressed by using
some AGP-only features, specifically the "gart":

That's what the Linux module adds support for.

It is hardly hyper-super-duper :-p It is a cheap knock-off found on
"integrated" mother-boards (i.e. you get what you pay for).  The
special module XFree requires is a kernel module; the card uses core
for video memory.  The i810s I've seen have had problems updating the
display in a timely fashion -- obvious flicker gets really annoying
quickly.

plan 9 from a USB floppy.  steer well clear anyway.  the
other night '98 told me it'd found another _processor_
when i plugged in my kodak cd burner -- yeah, right.

not just once either.

btw: i have a sony vaio with no internal peripherals
     except for the disk.  i like it being 22.2mm thick.
