Message-ID: <20011106165908.864B7199B5@mail.cse.psu.edu> (raw)

// Some links are found by asking a file server; some
// are found by consulting the process's name space.

this is incorrect. _all_ "links" are found by consulting
the processes name space, _then_ eventually by consulting
the appropriate file server. said file server may be a
"real" fs with lots of disk running a special kernel, a
user-land process providing disk access, a local kernel
device, a memory-based file system imported from another
system, a dæmon on a unix box...

the point is that there's one protocol for access to all
these devices, regardless of type, and one chunk of code
that acts as a client for them all (the kernel). i just
don't understand what you'd like to "take even further".
there are more things we can do, but i'm not sure what
disparity you see that you want to unify.

i want _more_ different types of file servers, doing more
and more interesting things, giving acces to more types
of information and services. would thins make worse the
problem you're trying to address?
