I had a similar problem just the other night. It turned out that
if I removed the Ethernet card, everything was happy. Now that
I have things installed on that machine, I need to go back and
see if there was a problem with the card or DHCP or something
else. So I'd suggest pulling the Ethernet card. If it's
integrated, then see if you can disable it in the BIOS. It
may not fix things, but at least it's a quick thing to try.

Actually it just prints cpu0: exiting
and that's it.

I've started to take it appart to see if I can
get the Ethernet out like Brian suggested (and
as the Bios does not give me the luxury of
disabling it) but it seems that there are some
hidden screws on my way ;-) .

it's worth investigating a little more before getting carried away.
i'd next try typing control-t control-t letter-p to see if that shows
what's running.

I saw something like this just yesterday on an Intel 440BX system.

If the BIOS was set to "Plug and Play OS: Yes", the kernel hung soon
after entry, but if I set it to "No" it continued, and the first thing
it printed that it hadn't when it was hanging was the detection of the
Ethernet card (I think it was an Etherlink III).

What's the "right" value for that BIOS setting?

The right value for the "Plug and Play OS" BIOS setting is "No".

BIOSes think that a Plug and Play OS is one that will go to great
trouble to reroute PCI interrupts and change IRQs (i.e., expend lots
of code doing what the BIOS should have done).

I finally took my laptop apart, had a close look
at what I could do to disable the Ethernet card,
decided there was nothing I could do and put it
back together.

Now, before I give up on this one, I'm looking
at what could be the reason of this hang up
and I'm still trying (hoping) to find a way
to have it boot.

I also have try some more solutions like setting
up my router as a DHCP server, having no router
at all but a direct connection to the DSL modem,
playing with the PXE agent menu...but still no luck.

I do not know what Plan9 is waiting for at this stage...!

If someone could point me to some documents on
how the boot procedure goes with Plan9 that will
be nice before I go shopping for a new unit.

Bonne journée.
Philippe

this may relate ...

installing on my toshiba satellite was a problem from he^H^H the start.
the install would hang in /rc/bin/termrc trying to bind a nonexistent
parallel port. i patched the cd iso image directly to fix the termrc
script to ignore the binding to #L by blotting out with spaces and
re-burning the image to a CD-RW. the system booted and i was able to
install.

[then i got a copy of the nvidia display driver from LLNL and had to
hack it to make the mouse pointer display and track correctly. on later
versions the display driver for the chipset (GeForce4 440 Go) doesn't
appear to work at all anymore]

Hnuh? What's this about? nVidia drivers? Google searches aren't
turning up much. What's LLNL?

he probably means LANL:

	http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~mirtchov/lanlp9/

there's an old nvidia driver patch there that has long since been
incorporated into Plan 9.

andrey is correct (my mistake).

but if these changes have been incorporated they have since been broken
i think; i use 1600x1200x16 @ dell2000fp to make my laptop display work.
installing with the latest distrib that offers the fossil option causes
the display to switch into graphics mode but appears to hang. (it didn't
respond to drawterm requests from the network anyway)

Hello all,

I've finally made it....manually...!!

While still searching why and trying for
a few more hours & just before giving up
I had a look at the Ethernet PCMCIA card
on my next laptop and decide to try with
this one instead. Still no luck...Stuck
at the same place. So while stucked, I
unplugged the PCMCIA card and HERE IT GOES....

The installation process goes on just fine....!!

I made a few more test but basically
it's only when I'm inserting or de-inserting
the card that the installation runs.

So, if any pcmcia card is plugged before booting,
I just have to unplugged-it when I'm stuck at :
.....
68462 free pages, 273848K bytes, 913848K swap

Or plugged it at the same point if it was
unplugged at boot time.

Voilà...Now it says : "failed to star rio. you can...."
but hey...."Chaque chose en son temps"

I wish I could explain why but it's well above my
competence.

Bonne journée..
Philippe Lucky Luke

Adding :

  pcmcia0=disabled

to plan9.ini solved the boot
problem for this HP ze5570us laptop.

I'm vncv to a W98 box without problem
but even after man(ing) vnc & searching
wiki & list archive, I'm unable to find
the way to properly quit the viewer session(s)
except by deleting the window where it is running.

No F8 vnc pop up menu ?

Would be happy to follow some pointer(s).

Philippe.

Windows boxen have an icon in the tooltray that pops-up into a control
menu when right clicked. One of the options in the list is
"Disconnect all clients" which I use. This is not so usefull if you have
multiple clients.
