I've seen this mentioned in the archives, but attributed to various
causes none of which apply here.

I'm installing Plan 9 on a Thinkpad T23. The "Install from CD" option
works -- I get rio and the install proceeds smoothly -- but on the
next boot the system hangs after the
    init: starting /bin/rc
message. I'm getting the same lack of progress if I try the "Live CD"
option of the boot disc. This is from an image downloaded an hour or
so ago, 2006-09-12.

Any tips, clues? I'd like to get P9 working for the OS class I'm taking now.

BTW, the boot options I've chosen are monitor=1024x768x32, vga=t23,
dma I've tried both ways (though I'll give "no" another try if someone
thinks it's warranted).

i'd start by booting the cd, mounting the local fossil and breadcrumb $home/lib/profile.
is it getting that far?

I'm not getting to any prompt on boot-up after installation. Is this
something I could do during the install process before [finish]?

yes, create a new window (right click, "new") and start from there :)

use the install cd to boot (option 2). or open a new window after/during/before
the install with option 1 from the boot menu.

ah, I forgot...

at the installer prompts you can enter "!rc" and get an rc prompt

Did that, but the problem evaporated on its own this most recent
install attempt; some of the messages came up, and then rio started.

Now to read the manual on getting sources mounted...

Thanks,

Problem's back.

While the system was running, I uncommented the ip/ipconfig lines in
(/rc)/bin/termrc and my machine was connecting to the network at
school. When I booted the machine not attached to a network, though,
I got the lines:
	init: starting /bin/rc
(long pause -- at least 30 seconds)
ndb/dns: can't read my ip address
after which nothing more happens.

Trouble is, the system now hangs (without displaying the ndb/dns
message) even when connected to the network (and after displying the
ndb/dns message if I re-disconnect). I can't even get into the system
far enough to breadcrumb /bin/termrc and /usr/chesky/lib/profile .

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 411 bytes --]

There is a little documented option in plan9.ini

init=/386/bin/rc

which will cause the kernel to spawn a shell rather than /386/bin/init
bypassing /rc/bin/termrc.

It sounds like your venti is so sick that I would reccomend that you
just tar off any data you want to keep and start again.

If you have a venti history you want you should be able to copy
any sealed arenas and reuse them.

I'll try that, thanks.

I never installed venti! This is a fresh install of a fossil-only
system, so there's nothing to preserve.

Should I be looking at the possibility of hard disk failure? Is there
an easy way to test for this?

i think you're install has it's wires crossed. the hang is from ip/ipconfig
trying to contact a dhcp server to get it's address. i've got a hunch your
fossil is trying to find a venti when you don't have one. i don't run venti,
so maybe i'm all wet on that one.

I think I'll include a prompt and query in termrc to decide whether to
run ip/ipconfig.

Sounds plausible, actually; while the machine was working, the
messages from fshalt included something about venti.

How would this confusion have happened, and how can I avoid it?

could it be that your venti address was assigned by dhcp in one location
and you moved, thus fossil can't find it?

How and why would fossil be looking for venti; I did a fossil-only
install (or selected that option, anyway).

Also, I've been assigned a permanent IP address by the school network admins.
