A few different people have reported seeing errors like:

       usage: basename [-d] string [suffix]
       usage: basename [-d] string [suffix]
       rc: null list in concatenation
       mk: rc ./manweb : exit status=exit(1)

during the "cd dist; rc ./manweb" phase of ./INSTALL.
I myself have seen it happen on one or two different
systems, but never reliably. (One of them broke
reliably, but only until I became interested in looking
at the problem.)

I have a plausible explanation for what is going on and
a bug fix that would test the explanation, but I don't
want to go poking around in the dark. Does anyone
have a machine where rc reliably errors out at the
end of ./INSTALL?

Thanks.
Russ

Yes, each time the plan9port is compiled under Solaris-5.10-Sparc
old and new versions of port produce the same behavior.
