* Alef is gone. It was deemed too difficult to maintain two sets of
compilers and libraries for all architectures. Alef programs were
translated into C, with the help of a new thread library
that preserves much of Alef's functionality, but none of its syntax.
Apparently (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) there is still a
version of Alef for SGI machines, whose existence somehow prevents the
releaseof the old source code under the new licence
