Well, i decided to get my rocks off and play some nifty tunes every
time i start Gnus. I did the following in my .gnus:

(setq gnus-audio-player "/local/bin/showaudio")
(setq gnus-startup-jingle "receiving.au")
(setq gnus-play-startup-jingle t)

I also have a (require 'gnus-audio) in my .emacs.

Now, gnus-play-jingle works fine _after_ gnus is loaded, but nothing
happens at startup. Am I doing something wrong here, or is it just not
properly implemented yet?

The jingle variables (and `gnus-inhibit-startup-message') are the only
variables that are used before .gnus.el is loaded. (Well -- and
`gnus-init-file', of course. :-) So you have to set them in .emacs
instead.

Ta very much - that sort of explains why the jingles suddenly started
working at some time. I must have quit Gnus, an then restarted it.

If I could only persuade XEmacs 19.15/tm to show me images inline and
japanese fonts, I would be close to nirvana.

XEmacs 19.15 isn't Muleized (only XEmacs 20.0 is), so you need that
one to see Japanese fonts.

Good luck getting XEmacs 19.15 to show japanese characters. :) 20.x on
the other hand is pretty seemless.
