I forgot to ask this a long time ago: in my group buffer I see
*              0: nnimap+gmail:INBOX

What does the * mean and how can I get rid of it?

It means you have articles in that group that have a mark (usually
ticked, ie '!'). You can get rid of the marks by entering the group
with RET, and clearing them using M-u (I think M-u respects the
process mark, so you should be able to do them all at once).

Is there any command to see all the message with a tick? When I use the
menu and select: «limit to» the tick does not appear.

to see messages marked with a tick (!) in a group, I enter the group and
hit x which is bound to:

gnus-summary-limit-to-unread

I see I could also use: / u,  or the menu <menu-bar> <Gnus> <Limit to>
<Unread>, the latter which you imply is not working for you.

It probably means you have flagged articles in the INBOX group, and to get
rid of it you just need to remove the "%M" from your
gnus-group-line-format.

I believe it means you have one or more articles ticked or persistent
in that group. The only way I've found to make it go away is to enter
the group and untick the article or remove it from the persistent
articles. Oh, I suppose you could unsubscribe from INBOX but that
seems like overkill :)

If not tick marks, you want to check the group parameters

I have a few groups I want to see allways, and I use 

 (visible . t)

for that in the group parameters

Use the G p or the G c command to edit group parameters of a group.

If that is the case, you must have customized the meaning of '*' in the
*Group* buffer:

  "2.1.1 Group Line Specification

  The default format of the group buffer is nice and dull, but you can
  make it as exciting and ugly as you feel like.

   *    0: alt.fan.andrea-dworkin

  Quite simple, huh?

Actually, no... but I *have* customized the group line format so partly
correct!

I have %B in my line which says to mark groups which have summary
buffers with a *.  %M does what you say (indicate marked articles) with
*.  Ummm, maybe gnus should use different symbols for these two very
different purposes?

By default they're in different locations, no? Is that not enough? ;-)

No, I think that would be:

       8:*gmane.emacs.gnus.general

The star after the number of articles. 

Star right at the beginning of the line means flagged articles in 
the group.

I'd be curious to hear what people think, as well. It seems pretty clear
to me that gnus.general has higher traffic. And I think the days when it
was necessary to separate Gnus developer discussion from Gnus user
discussion are behind us...

I only subscribe to gnus.general.  It's the one mirroring the ding
mailing list.
