* 'seen' state reset on Gnus restart?

Using a CVS gnus built at Sat Jan 12 16:45:56 EST 2002, from CVS, I have
an oddity in the behavior of the 'seen' mark.

Specifically, each time I restart Gnus, *all* unread articles are also
'unseen'. This is vaguely annoying I actually /use/ the distinction
between unseen and unread...

Is this a feature and, if so, where are it's knees so that I can break
them?[1]

        Daniel

FWIW, I've had a similar experience, and the culprit ended up being
~/mail/active -- for some reason gnus decided to stick a couple of my nntp
groups there, and then every time I restarted gnus my .newsrc.eld file would
get updated as if I'd never seen any of the articles in the group. Take a
look at your mail active file. I have no idea how this happened, of course...

Can you pinpoint the exact change?

Which backend?

in my case, nnml. all the news groups have correct unseen marks, only nnml's
are full such marks after restart.

Not for a couple of days, I suspect. I will see if I can find time soon,
I promise.
