I've had the following in my .gnus seemingly forever:

;; set Gnus x-face to match background color
(set-face-background 'gnus-x-face (face-background 'default))

But recent Oorts don't seem to like it:

Signaling: (error "No such face" gnus-x-face)
  get-face(gnus-x-face)
  set-face-property(gnus-x-face background #<color-specifier global=((... . "Gray80") (... . "Gray80")) fallback=((... . ...) (... . "white")) 0x1c5> nil nil nil)
  set-face-background(gnus-x-face #<color-specifier global=((... . "Gray80") (... . "Gray80")) fallback=((... . ...) (... . "white")) 0x1c5>)
  load-internal("~/.gnus" nil t t undecided)

  load("~/.gnus" nil t)
