Dear All,

my imap server was changed under the hood and now I am "missing" my
old emails.

The situation is as follows: Our imap server was upgraded to a new
machine and new software (now: Cyrus IMAP4 v2.1.11 server). The old
and the new server both were/are named imap.somedomain. All mail was
copied from the old server to the new one.

If my sysadmin looks at my mailboxes with mailx all my old mails seem
to be there, however in Gnus only new messages -- arrived after the
server change -- are visible.

I have tried to kill and resubscribe mailboxes, I have (for a few
mailboxes) deleted all entries in .newsrc.eld and resubscribed, but
still the old messages cannot be displayed. (Btw: Yes, I do C-u RET to
enter the group.)

What needs to be done to let Gnus find the old messages, too?

This is using Oort Gnus v0.16, but I had the same behavior with 5.9.

Greetings,
Jochen

Does it help to do M-x gnus-group-clear-data RET on the group?

A preposition is not a good thing to end a sentence with.

Is mailx a IMAP client? If not, maybe the IMAP indices weren't
rebuilt properly.

If it is a local cache corruption thing, you could try C-k all groups,
remove ~/News and restart emacs and subscribe to the groups again. If
this doesn't help, my bet it is a server problem. In case your server
admin lost your old mail, you may want to backup ~/News first though
(if you keep a cached copy there).

Trying with another IMAP client could be useful too.

Thanks for your help, the problem is mostly resolved, and it was
apparently some "administrative issue" on the server.

No, I had tried that before.

That seemed to have been the problem... or ACLs, or file-permissions,
or whatever.

Jochen
