I'm actually planning on finishing my studies here this autumn, which
means that all these gnusey things on ifi.uio.no will become rather
iffy after a while. To make the switchover easier, it would be nice
to register a gnus.org domain that one can then switch over to
wherever we want to as time passes, so that "ding@gnus.org" will
always be the address for this mailing list and
<URL:http://www.gnus.org/> will always be the home page for Gnus.

Jason R. Mastaler has graciously offered to offer a machine for
hosting a gnus.org for free. However, registering the domain costs
$100, and (this may sound really silly) I don't have any extra money
from now until the autumn. We could wait until then to do this thing,
but since it always takes quite a while to update all references to
old addresses (on Web pages, on documentation, in people's mail
readers) it would be nice to have this done as soon as possible.

So I wondered whether there is at all any possibility of getting ten
people to donate $10 or something. (You can't deduct this from your
taxes since I'm not (yet) an official charity. :-) If so, I'd be
eternally grateful.

However, those of us that are authorized to spend the company's funds
can certainly have the company earmark it as a legitmate
cost-of-doing-business, and therefore deductable as a business
expense. I could certainly make a business case for that from my
perspective (and personal benefit in using "ding").

So don't be so quick to call it "not deductible". Them's fightin'
words to an entrepreneur. :-)

Due to the generousity of Andreas, the money collection is no longer
necessary. He pays, Jason does the work, and I don't have to do
anything. :-)

Also thanks to all the people who offered to donate money. I'm
overwhelmed.

The only *difficult* problem that remains is what the Organization
Name of gnus.org is supposed to be. :-) xemacs.org has "XEmacs
Advocacy Group", for instance.

My mind is a complete blank here at the moment... "Gnus Newsreader
Technologies"? Eh. "Gnus -- People's Democratic Newsreader".
Perhaps we used that one up on the Red Gnus shirts... Uhm...

Not any more. That (IMHO excellent) name has been given up because of
the... uhm... wrong ways it could be understood.

I was thinking "Gnus-Reader Underground" so you could make puns about

Personally, I like the sound of gag.

Actually, that name does still exist as far as the InterNIC is
concerned. This first line of the whois lookup is the

Gnus Network User Services = GNUS

Has a nice (recursive) ring to it.

Well, if said user has code that dabbles in the internals of GNUS,
there's no way to support her. Hmm, or maybe we might just package
   4.1 along with ding? :-)

mail-yank-ignored-headers, mail-yank-prefix, mail-setup-hook,
mail-default-headers, mail-citation-hook, are hardly "the internals of
GNUS": they're variables which have existed and have been advertised
as existing for more than a *decade*, but message.el is apparently too
wonderful and too new and too clever and too clean to bother with
details such as accomodating actual users (as opposed to beta-testers
and other gnus groupies who have nothing better to do than mess with
their init files all day long.) There are about a dozen other such
variables.

Nor is send-mail-function an `internal' function.

Meanwhile, the new junk (message-citation-line-function,
gnus-message-archive-method, message-max-buffers) introduces worse
behaviour in incompatible fashion; such things should be turned off by
default.

At least we can be thankful that message.el deigns to look at -one-
predefined variable -- mail-header-separator !

I was pretty happy with the amazing job done with gnus 5.1, and in
particular with its upward-compatibility with old gnus (apart from the
hopeless, tasteless face fuckage induced by custom.el.)
5.2 is a big step back in accomodation to users.

Hmm, The Motto does get around, doesn't it? This is from my old

I've been getting very nostalgic for my netrekking days, and have been
fiddling around a little with 'metaserver.el' again - is the netrek
metaserver still out there? How about a nice 'netrek://hostname:port/' url
in the next revision of emacs-w3? :)

PS: Best 12 hours I ever spent in a computer lab was completely humiliating
some CMU weenie who had made admiral on some server, and demolishing
him over and over and over again while playing as 'ensign guest' while
we genocided his team over and over again. Ah, the glory days.

PPS:Hmmm, I think its time to check whether netrek works over a SOCKS

I was never much good at it, because when I was still young enough to have
the time and energy to play netrek all night the fastest color machine I
had access to was a Sun 3/60, and now that I have a nice big fast
workstation on my desk I also have a house and a wife and a life.

It might be fun to have the "gnus.org (ding) Top Sekrit Netrek Server"
though. Then we could all blow each other up instead of thinking of new
features for Lars to implement. :)

Hey; that's kinda neat. I've always wondered what "GNUS" was an

It's also very accurate, I must say.

Now _THIS_ would be cool. WHO'S UP FOR BLOOD?! :) Perhaps a quake
server would be more in line with the late 90's? 'Clan GNUS' or whatever
the hell the quake teams go by (I htink they are clans)

Yup. Alive and kicking.

:-)

Joe Rumsey had posted details on adding a mailcap entry to get
netscape to kick off the client in playback mode when you click on a
URL leading to a game recording.

I think you'll also find <URL:http://web.mit.edu/ttonchev/www/netrek/>
*very* interesting. Theo wrote a Java viewer for game recordings,
anyone with netscape can see some example plays without ever leaving
your browser. Check it out, all you gnus groupies.

Don't get me started.

I can assure you that it works reasonably well over an ssh-forwarded
encrypted X connection. :-)

Gnus Towers, is nice. It's even in the manual already, no need to
