Lately gnus has been transposing the last two characters in To: lines
of the form

To: <username>

The To line in the message that's sent says:

To: <usernam>e

This does *not* happen when the address is of the form

To: <username@place....>

I'm using Gnus v5.8.4, latest from cvs, with GNU Emacs 20.5.1
(i586-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit) of Tue Dec 14 1999 on g.wolfram.com

Is there a way to find out exactly what code is doing this?

Here's the return message I received for the latest incident. I meant
to send it to <caron> but gnus changed that to <caro>n.

This is an invalid mailbox. Local mailboxes have no punctuation; Internet
mailboxes require a fully-qualified domain part.

It's probably still a bug, though.
