Unable to View Messages from NNTP Server

Hello,

I am having trouble viewing messages from this list (and others on gmane) from 
within Gnus (both NoGnus yesterday git and 5.13) and Emacs 23.2.1. I am able to 
view the messages using another client, so it is not a firewall issue. With Gnus 
I subscribed to this list from the Group menu and can view the message list just 
fine, but attempting to view an individual message causes Gnus to hang and 
requires a control-G to get it back. I have restarted Gnus and Emacs several 
times and the problem persists.

It works for me.  What's in the " *server news.gmane.org...*" buffer
when it hangs?

In the *Summary nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.emacs.gnus.general* summary buffer I 
see a list of messages, they are sorted by thread. I suspect this is not the 
buffer to which you refer?

No, the buffer he's looking for has a name that starts with a space.  So
try doing `C-x b SPC * s e r SPC' and look at the list of buffers it
offers up and use auto complete to find the right one.

This buffer is completely empty.

It was nil. I changed it to 't' and there is no change in behavior.

Try `(setq debug-on-quit t)' and post the backtrace you get when it
hangs.

Oddly enough, this morning the nntp function is working for the first
time in over three weeks! Maybe setting the above function in the .gnus
file did the trick. ;p Either way, I am happy with it for now.

Now I feel odd. Must be intermittent. Immediately after posting the above

Hm.  You seem to be in a recursive edit when this happens.  Could that
explain why it happens intermittently?

Yes, it is clearly intermittent at this point. For some reason gnus is not 
waiting for a period of inactivity prior to checking for new mail, could this be 
accounting for it? But I don't think that it is checking new mail everytime this 
happens. I have this in .gnus but it seems to be ignoring it with NoGnus.

Yes, probably.  If the daemon starts trying to fetch stuff while you're
also fetching stuff, that's probably not going to be very successful.

Does the problem stop happening if you disable the daemon?

I disabled the daemon and restarted Gnus. 
Going into the server to select messages still gives me a tied-up Gnus. 
So it is not just the daemon. 
BTW, was my daemon code correct because Gnus was ignoring the what part?

Hm.  This is when selecting an article?  Does it only hang when
requesting articles, or when hitting RET on a group in the server
buffer, too?  The latter would be more interesting...

Well, it is more interesting then. It will hang sometimes when attempting to 
generate the list of messages from the server and sometimes it will hang only 
when requesting view of a message.
