What is happening in the following scenario:

In an nnml group hit e (edit) close edit with 'C-c C-c'
Now continue to open articles for reading - On my setup the headers
remains colorless as in edit mode. Where as prior to entering edit
mode messages opened for reading have varied color headers as set
with 'Customize".

Checking the major mode with the command 'M-: <major-mode><RET>
Shows 'gnus-summary-mode' as expected but the color headers remain
colorless until either the buffer is killed and group reopened or close
gnus and restart.

When I try this, the headers in the article buffer get colorized when
I hit `C-c C-c'.

Does this happen all the time, or just sometimes?

It happens every time -- using 5.6.11. But I see some work has been
done on article edit mode in version 5.6.21 so will install and see if
a problem still shows up.

**OOPS I inadvertantly sent this response directly to Lars -- this one
is to the list.

OK - I have installed version '21 and still see the same thing when
using gnus-article-edit-mode.

Once having engaged editing, the colors of article headers are gone
until a complete shutdown and restart is done. Even leaving the group
where the editing was done and opening a new group to read, the article
headers are colorless with out a full shutdown and restart.

Apparently, since Lars doesn't see this happen, it is something peculiar
to my set-up but I am at a loss as to where to look to solve it. Anyone
have an idea?

Do you set `gnus-article-display-hook' from some hook or other?

No -- I do have this function and hooks derived from a posting of yours
some time ago. Not sure it could have any bearing on this.

Perhaps it does. Try disabling that and see whether that helps.
