I don't use gnus-slave too often but did so today, and noticed there
was no mention of it in the modeline once it was running. Didn't
there used to be something indicated the instance was a slave?

I don't think so...

Additional note:

I'm also seeing this problem which I think is related:
      Opening nntp server on news.gmane.org...done
      ...ne.org/agent.lib/local locked by reader@reader...
      (pid 29843): (s, q, p, ?)?

And it hangs there. If I press `s' it still hangs there. (on the
master)

When using `M-x gnus-slave' and a running version of `M-x gnus', I'm
constantly prompted with:
.newsrc-dribble has changed since visited or saved.
   Save anyway? (y or n)
when I move between them.

Lars comical writeup in the manual doesn't deal with that directly but
seems to imply that this won't mess up .newsrc* files.

Is this normal, if so is there somewhere to quiet that message. It
can be a real pain after while.

Yup. Fix in Red Gnus v0.48.

Shouldn't `gnus-slave' read any existing slave files?

If I start `gnus-slave', read a few articles, and exit gnus, if I then start
`gnus-slave' again, the articles I read are presented to me again as being
unread.

I would think starting up `M-x gnus-slave' should happen exactly as `M-x gnus'
does, except that `gnus-slave' would not delete the slave files.
No?

Michael.
