Remember the last time I had to give a talk, and, like, er, what an
experience that was? Well, now it's going to happen again, only, this
time, in Japan. :-)

No, not really, but I've been invited to "m17n99: the 3rd International
Symposium on Multilingual Information Processing" (thanks to Martin,
Steve and gNiibe), and I'm to give a 30-60 minute talk on a topic of
my choosing. Er. Of course I'm saying yes, but what on Earth should
I talk about? Charset issues in relation to MIME, or something? I'm
certainly no charset expert, but my MIME is getting better...

Lars; elated at the moment, but probably going to be somewhat more
nervous as March 23 approaches... :-)

You think you have a problem? I'm invited too, and there is nothing
multilingual or Mule specific about either custom or AUC TeX[1]. And I'm
/not/ going to deliver a 30 minutes speach about `double-mode'!

I wrote back (aproximately an hour ago) that they should contact
someone qualified instead, and suggested you!

Well, if they sustain the invitation I'm going to talk about the
design of the custom package.

I thought you might have some experience with Mule, seen from the
point of view of a western programmer who is forced to deal with it.

But MIME support in Gnus, with an emphasis on text with multiple
character sets, would be the obvious topic.

Maybe I'll see you in Japan.

Footnotes:
[1] Well, there is the `german' style file, which rebinds `"'. And
there is the `tex-jp.el' contributed file, which is full of comments
like this:

    ;; 次の処理で文末にはtwo spacesがあり、それ以外はsingle spaceになっている。

and now is actually the first time I have seen the file as it is
supposed to look.

Hey, how many people have Steve and Martin invited? Maybe we can just
hold an Emacs conference, and forget about those hard multilingual
questions. ;-)

I've thought a bit about it, and I think I can find 30 minutes worth
to warble on about MIME/charset support in Gnus and the lack of such
in the rest of the software world. :-)

I was invited too, to my surprise and flattered pleasure. I'm surely tempted
to go, but my reasons are rather egotistic. I'm rather hesitant to see
people doing such expenses on me, while I have so little to give in return.

Yeah, right. You are only the author and maintaniner of GNU recode,
and one of the driving force behind the localization and translation
of the GNU utilities, and you are only approximately a hundred times
more relevant there than the rest of us.

I doubt the last part of the last sentence very much. :-)

Anyway. It's beginning to look like this mailing list is going to be
somewhat quiet in the last week of next month. :-)

You are extremely generous with me. Thanks for the good thoughts!

One strong incentive for me is the idea of putting faces, smiles and
characters (at least, I have one! :-) on those email names I saw all around
on my screen for so long. This might also be my only chance, as I'm really
not a traveller. I'll see if I cannot find something to speak about,
which the organisers would judge interesting enough to warrant me there.
I'm still uncomfortable with the expense thing, but maybe I should merely
let it be my own problem, and learn to live with it! :-)
