Actually most people appear to be happy with the agent.  Niklas is
just one of an apparently small group that are having trouble.

Also Kai suggested that you check the manual for "unplugged" because your
config settings (i.e. (setq gnus-use-cache t)) has nothing to do with
the agent.  

The minimum that you should need to do is as follows:
1) In the group buffer, enter '^' to open the server buffer.
2) Move point to the server that you want to agentize.
3) Enter 'J a' to agentize the server.
4) Enter 'q' to return to the group buffer.
5) Open the group.
6) Select articles for downloading using '@'.  You should see a '%'
   mark appear next to each article.
7) Enter 'J u' to fetch the selected articles.
8) Read the manual as the agent can do quite a bit more than this.
