I got the message below, apparently utf-7, which gnus unfortunately
displayed with literal "+AF8-" sequences, that I think were meant to
be underscores.

My ignorance of these charset questions is pretty profound, so I don't
know if the message is correctly formatted or not.

An underscore does not need to be encoded specially
(at least "echo _|recode ascii..utf-7" returns "_").

Your Emacs 21 (and thus Gnus) doesn't know UTF-7 as a valid charset.
You may want to have look at [1] (and the references therein) for an
UTF-7 wash function for Gnus (`rs-gnus-article-treat-utf7').

Some dodgy treatment at the sender's side I suppose.

Ah, right.  Might have been nice if gnus said something prominently to
that effect.  Hmm, I think I'll just hope I don't get any more of
those messages.
