So I've been searching for a new font, since I somehow blew away my
old happy working font setup in Emacs.

I'd like _underline_, *bold*, and /italics/ to work in Gnus, and I'd
prefer a fixed-width font to a proportional font. I'd also like a
nice simple clean font like "fixed", or the one I'm currently using,
"-*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-sans-12-*-100-100-*-*-*-*".

Any recommendations?

Jack.

I'm somewhat partial to the "Gamow" font from the Linux Font Project:

   http://dreamer.nitro.dk/linux/lfp/

(Small sample of Gamow-9 attached.)

I'm using "-*-Neep-Medium-R-*-*-*-120-75-75-*-*-iso8859-1". This font
is part of the jmk-x11 font package. No italic, though... Not sure
where they can be found, but I think the author's homepage may be a
good start: http://www.pobox.com/~jmknoble/

Those fonts are part of FreeBSD's ports packages at
/usr/ports/x11-fonts/jmt-x11-fonts -- I'm now trying Gamow from the
/usr/ports/x11-fonts/nucleus as recommended by Chad House earlier in
the thread.

I've stuck the following line in my .gnus:

(set-default-font "-nucleus-gamow-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-*-iso8859-1")

I was reading through the documentation and tried this, but it didn't
work:

(add-hook 'gnus-load-hook '(lambda () (set-default-font
(set-default-font
"-nucleus-gamow-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-*-iso8859-1"))))

But that didn't work. Any ideas on why not?

On my linux box, I've settled on

  -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-m-*

                                        Be seeing you,

I like -etl-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-160-72-72-c-80-iso8859-1,
myself. This is part of the GNU intlfonts package (on FreeBSD, there
is also an ETL-Fonts package). However, it's too large for you, I
guess. The smaller version doesn't have bold :-(

I am liking Neep over Gamow very much. It is narrower, which is a Good
Thing for faces with a point size >14 or so. Underscoring is a little
weird looking, but I can get used to that. It doesn't have italics but I
use a TrueType based Lucida Sans Typewriter for that (yay, xfstt :).

Well, aside from the duplicated set-default-font bit, Emacs does not like
changing the default face on the fly once other faces have been defined.
But you might try this:

 (set-face-font
  'default "-nucleus-gamow-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75--*-iso8859-1")

instead. That might work. It did for me (note the removal of the 'c' in
the spec). XEmacs 21.1; YMMV.
