When you enter a group, it shows you a dummy article and next time it
fetches it.  If you haven't entered a group in N days, it stops
fetching that group.

You can't turn off this behavior, but you can circumvent it, like so:

* Never enter a group you don't want, and
* `touch /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/*' every day, then
  Leafnode thinks you have read the groups in question.

You could also manually remove files from this directory for groups
you are not interested in.
