Has the updating of summary lines in v0.16 broken? When I hit `E'
with point on an article, the article is marked as expirable but
the summary line remains unchanged. Same with `d' to mark an
article as read. But strangely `!' does update the summary line
correctly.

So no "E" mark is set on the summary line?

That's right. Internally the article is marked as expirable, but I
see no sign of this until I quit the summary buffer and reenter.
Even in auto-expire groups this happens, so it is very disconcerting.
The same sort of thing happens if I delete an article: no G appears,
but if I try to select it I am (rightly) unable to. Is this happening
to anyone else?

I made some changes in this area to make it impossible to mark
articles with negative article numbers, but I'm unable to get it to
not mark regular articles...

One further clue: it happens in nnfolder groups, but not in nntp
groups. I don't have any other groups handy to test it on. Any
ideas where I could look to fix this?

Quassia Gnus v0.17; nntp 5.0; nnmh 1.0; nndraft 1.0; nnfolder 1.0

Perhaps it has something to do with sparse articles or something. Try
starting Emacs with -q and see if the problem goes away. If so, try
adding in your variable settings until you find one that makes Gnus
misbehave in this manner.

Extensive experimentation has revealed that the problem with unmarkable
messages occurs if gnus-use-cache is set to nil and not if gnus-use-cache
is set to 'passive. It happens in both nnfolder and nntp groups.
(In the parameters to a topic containing nnfolder groups I set
gnus-use-cache to nil, so that's why I thought it was specific to
nnfolder groups.)

Here's a trimmed .gnus for which the problem occurs:

(setq gnus-nntp-server nil
      gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.jhu.edu")
      gnus-directory "~/Gnus"
      gnus-use-long-file-name t
      gnus-save-newsrc-file nil
      gnus-save-killed-list nil
      gnus-check-new-newsgroups nil
      gnus-check-bogus-newsgroups nil
      gnus-read-active-file 'some
      gnus-use-scoring nil
      gnus-secondary-select-methods '((nnfolder ""))
      nnmail-spool-file nil
      nnfolder-directory "~/Gnus/Mail"
      nnfolder-active-file "~/Gnus/Mail/active"
      nnmail-use-long-file-names t
)

(setq gnus-use-cache nil)

What kinds of articles is this happening with? All, or just some?

Every article I've tried it with. ! shows up and M-u clears marks,
but hitting `d' and `E' make no changes to the appearance of the
summary buffer. They do affect the future treatment of the article,
however.
