I forgot about the anniversary this year as well:
Sun Dec 11 06:32:40 1994 Lars Ingebrigtsen <lars@eyesore.no>
* gnus.el: The very first (ding) Gnus pre-release.
... hey, it's still December 11th in some parts of the world, so I'm
not really too late!
It's been, ah, two years. Seems much longer. :-) But it's been
fun. Lah-dee-dah. I'm not very at making speeches. So, uhm. Like.
You know.

Thanks Lars, it's one of my favorite pieces of software.

I have run a bit of statistics on the local spool, counting the
newsreader specified by X-Newsreader or X-Mailer. Here are the top 10
result for the `gnu.*' hierarchy:
2201 *Gnus*
1607 Unidentified
777 Mozilla
457 TIN
76 Forte Free Agent
75 WinVN
71 Microsoft Internet News
50 slrn
45 Other
33 VM
Gee, makes one wonder why JWZ gave up XGnus to work for a loser
company like Netscape :-).
Ok, the results are slightly less impressive for the `comp' hierarchy,
but it still makes it to the top 10:
29564 Unidentified
27020 Mozilla
10232 TIN
9682 Forte Free Agent
9396 Microsoft Internet News
6582 Forte Agent
2926 WinVN
2895 NewsWatcher
2395 News Xpress
2047 *Gnus*
1803 IBM NewsReader/2
1346 Other
1191 NN
1163 slrn
892 Turnpike
801 THOR
776 knews
750 NeoLogic News
495 Trumpet
342 Gravity
337 Demon Internet Simple News
280 MacSOUP
272 Alexandra.app
246 AOL
210 Nuntius

Does this mean more people use gnus or that we are just more
prolific authors (not to mention more interesting :-).

Hmmm, a high rank in the comp.* hierarchy is to be expected, I think.
The really interesting checks would be on the soc.* and rec.*
hierarchies to see if Gnus users are well-rounded or not. ;-)
IMHO,
Michael

Speaking of statistics, somebody just did a tally of newsreaders used
in Norwegian newsgroups. Here's an excerpt:
73346 READERS IDENTIFIED IN 85064 FILES
23217 Mozilla
12363 Gnus
8537 Forte Free Agent
5189 Microsoft Internet News
5122 Forte Agent
3281 TIN
2282 THOR
2192 WinVN
1782 Yet Another NewsWatcher
1764 News Xpress
1373 slrn
1100 MacSOUP
681 Pine
665 Trumpet for Windows
659 knews
399 ICE Crisis
330 IBM NewsReader
Patriotism strikes again, I guess. :-)

I'd guess Gnus users are generally "heavy" posters, but that's just a
feeling I have. I wish I was doing Gnus for my master's thingie; then
I would do all sorts of neat statistical analyses.

Can't imagine how bad my life would be without GNUS!
Thanks Lars!

I did the statistics, and let me summarize them this way:
If you use Gnus, you apparently don't need other recreations.

... Either that you you've personally written 12363 articles ;-)
Actually, it would be better to analyse them based on addresses. I
actually had set up bbdb to capture mailreader lines, just for
curiosity, on every article I read. But that was back at Davis and it
would be skewed as well based on the fact I didn't read every
article...
Hey!!!
(in ~/News/nnml/ding)
8:28am iptsun2 [109]: grep X-Mailer * | grep -v Gnus
2266:X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24]
2291:newsreader specified by X-Newsreader or X-Mailer. Here are the top 10
2292:> newsreader specified by X-Newsreader or X-Mailer. Here are the top 10
2294:per> newsreader specified by X-Newsreader or X-Mailer.
ELM!!!
And here I was hoping for 100% gnus in the ding list...
Wes
