It seems that you got pretty far already.  I think that problem could
be solved.  Do you want to try again?

You could M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET before the error happens,
then make the error happen, then look at the resulting backtrace.
(Or post it here.)  You could also try to remove the *.elc files
before starting Emacs so that you get a more informative backtrace.

I think you were frobbing load-path too late.  Some parts of Gnus had
been loaded already, then you frobbed load-path to point to the new
version, then the rest of Gnus was loaded.  So you had half an old
Gnus and half a new Gnus in your Emacs.

Down that path lies madness.
